Technology Center |
The Argentia Management Authority (AMA) carried out a market study,
with support from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA),
to identify potential new business and economic inputs for the Argentia
area. The study recommended the development of an Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) business base in the region, with
particularly strong potential for Help Desk services. After a full
review of the various buildings and locations within the Placentia/Argentia
area, it recommended the construction of a new, modern ICT centre
in Argentia.
The new $1-million dollar Technology Centre has secured its first tenant, Tacamor
Holdings (formerly PB Tech Inc.), a newly-formed Newfoundland-based
ICT company focused on providing help desk services to North American
markets. Presently, Tacamor has moved into the new centre (named The
John Whelan Building), and have completed the installation of the
technical equipment and office furniture. Combined with investments
from Tacamor Holdings for the purchase of computer and telecommunications
hardware and software and other start-up costs, the total project
will see an investment of $6.3 million over three years.
This project is seen as an excellent opportunity to provide a tremendous
boost in employment to the Argentia area. Tacamor Holdings is working
diligently with a Provincial client on a service contract that will
see 20 customer representatives employed (10 are currently in training
onsite), and forecasting that their employment levels will increase
to 300 in the third year. Tacamor Holdings estimated payroll costs
are expected to have an annual direct contribution of over $11 million
to the local economy, making it one of the largest private employers
in the Argentia area.
It is anticipated that the development of a knowledge-based economy in the
area, and particularly the presence of Tacamor Holdings will help ensure the
future diversification and viability of the entire region.
The Argentia Technology Centre, which is located in our Technology Park
(which is comprised of 10 acres of flat land on the Southside of Argentia) was
constructed on schedule, and on budget.
