Busy Year in Argentia - 2011
The Port of Argentia as this photo indicates, is a very busy port this year. High berth file rates combined with overflowing of laydown yards are the order of business. Cargo is arriving at the Port through new companies for Vale, regular shipping by Eimskip, Clearwater, Holcium and others has grown throughout the season. High port utilization is expected to continue throughout the fall of 2011 and continue into 2012.

M/V Tracer is a specialist heavy lift cargo vessel built in china in 1999, sailing under the Netherlands Antilles flag. She is owned by Pine Maritime of Monaco and technically managed by Graig Ship Management. Tracer is of 6,714 GRT and 2,897 NRT with an overall length of 100.70 m and a breadth of 20.60 m. She has a deadweight of 8.734 mt at a summer draught of 8.00 m. Tracer is powered by a Wartsila medium speed diesel engine which can be operated from the bridge, and is capable of speeds up to 17-18 knots. However, our normal service speed was 14-15 knots. She has a single controllable pitch propeller and is equipped with a bow thrusters. She has one hold served by two cranes each with a safe working load of 275 mt.
The ship recently called at the Port of Argentia, NL to offload a cargo of 2000 mt of structural steel. This steel will be stored in the Vale Marshalling Yard on the Northside of Argentia until such time as it will be shipped to the Vale construction site in Long Harbour.
TARIFF/RATES
As we enter into the 2011 shipping season, the Port of Argentia deems it necessary to notify all patrons operating within the designated Port of Argentia lands or properties that projects coming to the Port have taken on a complexity which is not specified in the fixed schedule of rates and may be relevant to one portion of the project, but not applicable to another portion.
Therefore, the Port has decided to stay with rates quoted to companies in early 2009 and 2010 up until July 1, 2011. At that juncture in time each project which includes cargo such as modules, structural steel, tanks and various mining and/or operating equipment etc. which require special lifts and/or require special planning including offshore related operations will be processed on an individual basis.
Budgetory figures will be provided as usual offering the bidders the most consistent prices available throughout the industry for like or similar functions or product movement.
Please advise the Port of Argentia with any information on upcoming projects as soon as possible so that files may be started and quotes noted for the 2012 season.
Notice of Rate Increases
Effective July 1, 2011 all rates contained within Schedule “B”, wharfage and transfer charges, Schedule “C”, facilities storage charges and Schedule “D”, facilities berthage charges, will be subjected to a ten percent (10%) increase across the board. Argentia Port Corporation rates have remained stable since April 2007.
Rate increases at this time are necessary to help offset rapidly rising port operating costs.
Notice of Crane & Boom Truck Rates
On July 1, 2011, a rate will be charged to crane companies which have cranes or boom trucks operating on or near the wharf deck or wharf apron areas at the Fleet or Navy Docks in Argentia, NL.
The rate shall be applied as follows:
- This rate shall be based on the crane capacity – one Canadian dollar ($1.00) for every tonne of crane capacity per eight (8) hour period or part thereof. (i.e. 50 tonne crane = $50.00 for eight (8) hour or part thereof) same crane for 16 hours working on the dock or apron = $100.00 and so forth.

The Port of Argentia is rapidly ramping up to what is about to be the busiest shipping season for some time.
Barge traffic has already begun. This traffic will be in addition to regular shipping such as containers, salt, cement, s teel and fish products.
Fabrication facilities have been established both inside and outside port properties. The end products constructed will add to shipping schedule intensity throughout the early summer and fall season.
Other products are scheduled to support offshore activities, shipping or aggregates and many others which are in the planning stages for late this year and future years.
The Port of Argentia is poised to provide efficient, effective service to all our customers so that all projects can be brought to a customer satisfied conclusion while enabling shippers and contractors to engage in profitable enterprise.
