700/1000 Series
Housing Negotiations Concluded
Press Release - October 26, 2001
The Argentia Management Authority is pleased to announce that negotiations
have been successfully concluded with Public Works and Government
Services Canada (PWGSC) regarding the 700/1000 series housing located
in Argentia. Harvey Mercer, Chairperson of the AMA says "this
project will provide much needed employment to those in the area
who have been unable to find employment this year."
These negotiations have concluded almost two years of fairly intensive
work that saw the complete assessment of the buildings, analysis
of future potential for the housing units and negotiations with
PWGSC for funding, by special committees of the AMA Board. These
committees were assisted in their efforts by Argentia staff, engineers
and others who concluded that due to the age and disrepair of the
units the only available option was to remove the buildings from
the site.
Mr. Mercer advises that the AMA will enter into an arrangement
with the Placentia Area Development Association (PADA) to deconstruct
the housing units in Argentia. He says "that with PADA's past
record of maximizing job creation on short-term projects, the AMA
visualizes maximum benefit for the local area."
