AMA Congratulates Province and Vale Inco
Press Release – January 30, 2009
For Immediate Release
Argentia, NL, - On Thursday, January 29, 2009, the Provincial Government and Vale Inco reached an agreement-in-principle on amending the original 2002 Development Agreement for the construction of a commercial hydromet processing plant at Long Harbour. The Argentia Management Authority Inc. (AMA), an organization responsible for the redevelopment of Argentia, offers their congratulations to Premier Williams, Minister Dunderdale, and Vale Inco on this very positive news announcement.
AMA Chairperson, Harvey Mercer is confident that this new agreement will mean greater benefits for the Province as well as for the business community and increased employment opportunities for our residents. “AMA has continued an excellent working relationship with the Vale Inco Team for twelve years now, and we support the Premier and his government on this particular project because it will bring so many positive benefits and provide new growth opportunities for our local communities, businesses, and residents” said Chairperson Mercer.
AMA General Manager, Mr. Ken Browne, stated “this announcement brings a renewed certainty to Vale Inco’s Commercial Hydromet Processing Plant for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, especially in light of the major downturn in the global economy and the cancellations or delays of many major projects elsewhere.” Browne further added, “Local residents can be assured that there will be increased employment opportunities according to this welcomed announcement and businesses will be able to access the tremendous opportunities available during both the construction and operating phases of the project.”
AMA believes that Argentia with its superb port, fully serviced commercial and heavy industrial parks, and more than 3000 acres of relatively flat land, makes an ideal location for businesses wishing to establish or expand their operations to take advantage of this huge $2.2 billion project. Browne said, “Argentia is ready for your business now, and yesterday’s announcement demonstrates that the economic future looks bright for the Town of Placentia and the surrounding communities.”

Argentia,
NL: - July 27, 2007. Under warm sunny skies this morning, a brand

for the new combined reefer and container vessel, and is part of the current
Eimskip service going from Iceland and the United
States through
Argentia. Constructed at Myklebust Verft
AS in Norway, the Dalfoss is the third newbuilt reefer vessel received by
Eimskip-CTG in the last 18 months which is in accordance with their building
programme for reefer vessels announced in 2004.

in the Argentia Freezers and Terminals Facility at Argentia. The Dalfoss is 82m long and 16m wide, has a
maximum cruising speed of 16 nautical miles per hours, and deadweight of 2,500
tonnes. The vessel has substantial
loading and discharging capacity, about 200 tonnes per hour, and is able of
carrying 1,800 pallets and 28 forty-foot containers on deck. It also has side ports which enables driving
pallets directly onboard instead of having to hoist them using a crane.
AMA General Manager, Mr. Ken Browne was dockside this
morning to meet Mr. Jón Jóhannsson, Manager of Eimskip Newfoundland, and Agnar Gudmundsson, Captain of the Dalfoss at the Port of Argentia. During the brief presentation, Mr. Browne said,

Corporation (APC), I would like to welcome Mr. Jóhannsson, and the Dalfoss’s captain and crew to the Port of Argentia. Argentia and Eimskip have had an excellent long
relationship, and we are happy that you chose Argentia as your first port of call
in North America.”
Eimskip Manager, Mr. Jóhannsson
remarked, “Eimskip is thrilled to add a new
reefer vessel to our fleet, and this development further strengthens our vision
to become a key international player in temperature-controlled cargo worldwide,
as well as to further consolidate our position as a transport market leader
offering total services in the North Atlantic. Your
welcome this morning to the Port of Argentia is most appreciated.”

Fibre Optic Cable Ship at Argentia
Press Release - June 7, 2007
For Immediate Release
Argentia, NL – FIBRE
OPTIC CABLE - Like a ghost ship in the fog
the M.V. IT Intrepid arrived through the
fog in
Argentia Harbour on Tuesday
June 6, 2007. However, far from being a ghost ship, the IT
Intrepid is a state of art cable laying ship that will bury a sub sea fiber
optic cable between Nova Scotia along the south coast Newfoundland. This cable will terminate at Argentia before
it heads overland to St. John’s thus giving the Island a truly diverse, second,
separate company communication connection to the mainland of North
America.
Ken Browne, General Manager, of the
Argentia Management Authority Inc. (AMA) said, “this is a bright day for the
future of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Communities such as Burgeo, Ramea, Harbour Breton and Grand Bank, to
name a few, who traditionally relied on the fishery, now have the ability to
attract Information Technology (IT) to their communities. This will also allow for use of internet telephone
systems thus giving rural Newfoundland legitimate competition among the phone
industry service providers which should lower prices in the long term.”
The fiber optic cable will also provide IT
business in Argentia with significantly better options for communication than
the community currently has in place.
The AMA applauds and thanks Persona for choosing Argentia as the sea
termination site for its Fiber Optic Cable.

New Recreational Vehicle and Travel Trailer Park Slated for Argentia
Press Release - June 1, 2007
For Immediate Release
Argentia, NL – NEW RECREATIONAL VEHICLE AND TRAVEL TRAILER PARK
SLATED FOR ARGENTIA - The Argentia Management Authority Inc. (AMA)
is pleased to announce the start of a new recreational vehicle (RV)
park that will be called the Argentia Sunset Park and will be located
on the site formerly known as the 1000 Housing Area, Southside,
Argentia, Newfoundland. The RV Park will include 40 RV lots measuring
25 ft wide by 80 ft long set at 45 degrees to the existing roads,
with a 10 ft buffer between each lot.
 |
The new park will provide all of the necessary services expected
today for the modern RV user, namely: water, sewer, and a 30-amp
electrical service. Also, a building located at the entrance to
the park will be used for management and administration activities,
and will receive complete internal renovations including: electrical,
fluorescent lighting, electrical receptacles, drop ceiling, washrooms,
and showers.
The AMA is also glad to announce that a management agreement for
the management of the RV Park will be completed with the owners
of Fitzgerald’s Pond Park, David and Susan Bartlett. They will be
responsible for the full operation of the park, including the day-to-day
booking/marketing operations and maintenance of the park facility.
Overall, we are marketing the RV Park to capture tourists and visitors
to our area who are: 1) incoming and outgoing on the Marine Atlantic
ferry, 2) vacationers who are visiting the Town of Placentia and
area, and 3) special events, such as the regatta, reunions, or festivals
as an additional source of accommodations to attract more visitors
to our historic town. Having tourists stay at a single location
allows for input into the local itinerary, thus promoting local
attractions and businesses.
Construction of the RV Park has been awarded to Edward Collins
Contracting Ltd. from the Town of Placentia and work will begin
on July 17, 2006, with an estimated completion date of October 31,
2006. The new RV Park is part of the AMA’s “Tourism Argentia” Strategy
which primarily is focused on the promotion of the Museum of the
Atlantic Allies proposal, the 282 Coastal Defense Battery Guns,
the Q Driving Range, and the Argentia Backland Trail.
