Argentia Management Authority
AMA Board of Directors
In late 1994, following the closure of the US Naval Facility at
Argentia, the Government of Canada announced a $5-million fund to
be managed by a local development group to oversee the redevelopment
of the Argentia industrial site. The organization established and
charged with the responsibility of managing the site was the Argentia
Management Authority Inc. (AMA).
The establishment of this fund provided a solid foundation for
the AMA to attract industry to Argentia. In addition to the cooperative
working relationship with the Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency
(ACOA), the AMA worked with Public Works and Government Services
Canada (PWGSC) who was responsible for undertaking a $106-million
dollar remediation project to clean up the former American military
base in accordance with CCME guidelines.
The AMA is a non-profit organization and is a volunteer Board comprising
of ten business and community area volunteers, including the Mayor
for the Town of Placentia or his designate, and ex-officio members
from PWGSC and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, that
was given the arduous task of marketing and attracting business
operations into the region.
The Board of Directors meets weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, depending
on business volume, to make sound and practical decisions on potential
business opportunities, site operations, and other related matters
supporting community initiatives. Members of the Board serve a two-year
term and may be re-appointed an additional two-year (2) term by
the Selection Committee comprising of representatives from the Town
of Placentia and the AMA. The AMA Board of Directors elects the
Executive members.
