Construction Detail/ architectural Features:
Battery 281 is one of the “200 Series” U.S. costal defense facilities
built through out North America during the Second World War. The
“200 Series” costal defense bunkers were engineered by the U.S military
and duplicated at varies sites. The 282 bunker is unique due to
the commission of the muffler gallery, making the Argentia battery
unique in the world. The structure was designed to operate 2, 6
inch artillery guns 25 feet long weighing 20,700 pounds, each that
could fire a projectile 360 degrees and up to 15 miles.
Brief History of Structure Including Past, Present and
Proposed Use.
The 282 artillery bunker was used to defend Fort McAndrew Argentia,
the Naval Air Station Argentia and surrounding waters against enemy
attack during WWII. The guns defended U.S. Navy Warships that escorted
Convoys from the Bedford Basin and the United States during the
Battle of the Atlantic. Current proposed use is stabilization and
interpretive display of the structure and the 2 naval guns.
